19 Lakh+
People excluded from the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam.
300+
Foreigners Tribunals established across 33 districts in Assam.
The magnitude of the crisis brewing in Assam cannot be captured by statistics alone, but the sheer number of people embroiled in this saga tells a tale of its own. A total of 19,06,657 people were excluded from the final list of the NRC published in 2019. More than 100 Foreigners Tribunals are operational and another 200 have been notified to hear appeals against exclusion from the NRC across 33 districts in Assam. FT cases constitute 36% of the overall pending cases in the state. The huge volume of pendency before the Tribunals, as well as the prospective NRC appeals process, makes the provision of legal aid vital to the fulfilment of constitutional imperatives under Article 39A.
